Description
Sabai Grass, found perennially across the states of Bengal and Orissa, is a special type of wild grass used to fabricate craft and utility items. The humble grass was once used to weave Sabai rope which is now being transformed into eco-friendly functional products.
This variety of grass has a high potential to be dyed using natural or vegetable dyes. The procedure of making Sabai grass items involves the cutting and bundling of strands followed by the mixing of colours proportionately which is added to boiling water. Finally, the strands are soaked and sun-dried. Nowadays, Azo-free dyes are also an alternative to natural or vegetable dyes.
Presently, this traditional craft-making practice has been turned into a source of income for the localites. Grass to grace, indeed!
